Jeff Stelling destroys Junior Firpo after what he did in Leeds United 2-2 draw v Newcastle

Jeff Stelling has destroyed Junior Firpo after the Leeds United left-back was sent off during the 2-2 Premier League draw against Newcastle United.

Goals from Rasmus Kristensen and Luke Ayling saw Sam Allardyce’s side earn a precious point in their battle to avoid relegation.

However, the game ended on a sour note with the 26-year-old defender being given his marching in stoppage time. Stelling has since reacted to the incident live on Sky Sports.

“Junior Firpo has just rounded off a shocker of a day there with that red card,” said Stelling (Sky Sports News, 14:21).

Low point

The sending-off is a new low point for Firpo. He’s certainly improved during the latter stages of the season, but, on the whole, his career at Leeds United has been largely disappointing. He cannot seem to shift the rash moments from his game and that’s ultimately going to be why he isn’t a long-term solution for the club.

The draw against Newcastle has given Leeds a glimmer of hope. The Whites are just one point off Everton, who currently occupy 17th position, above the dotted line. All eyes will be on Goodison Park on Sunday as Manchester City look to tighten their grip on the Premier League title against the Toffees.

Leeds could really do with Pep Guardiola’s side continuing their fine form against Sean Dyche’s side to ensure Everton remain within touching distance.

The next two fixtures against West Ham and Tottenham are certainly winnable. Four points are an absolute minimum to give the Yorkshire side the best chance of avoiding the drop.
