Jeff Stelling defends Leeds United after 1-0 loss v Southampton
Leeds United suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Southampton on Saturday, with Armando Broja’s second-half goal enough to inflict pain on them.
The visitors did not manage to register a single shot on target all through 90 minutes, and injuries coupled with the absence of Raphinha saw them struggle at St. Mary’s
Leeds were without Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips, and Jeff Stelling leapt to their defence when Kris Boyd attempted to mock them during the game.
As shared by Football Live Twitter account, the Sky Sports pundit asked the veteran presenter: “How’s Leeds getting on today Jeff?”
He fired back: “Stay with Hearts actually buddy, that’s the same scoreline, 1-nil, but then again, they don’t have Phillips and they don’t have Bamford or Raphinha so stick that in your pipe!”
Underwhelming
Leeds were always going to struggle without Raphinha, Bamford and Phillips, but they have no excuse for putting in a poor performance against a Southampton side that had not won a league game prior to the clash.
Despite slightly having more possession, they attempted just three shots – with none troubling the goalkeeper.
On the other hand, the Saints had 19 shots, and four of them found the target.
That made all the difference at the end of the day, and the Whites need to do better going forward.
Injuries have contributed to their woes and struggles this term, but that is not an excuse, and they could find themselves struggling for survival if things do not change quickly.
Leaving the St. Mary’s without a point would hurt, and Marcelo Bielsa needs to find the answers to the problems at Leeds sooner rather than later.
