Javi Gracia could be handed deal until 2024 by virtue of agreement with Leeds United

Javi Gracia could reportedly be handed a contract at Leeds United beyond the end of the season and perhaps until 2024.

According to Spanish media outlet Marca on 21 February, the former Watford manager will be handed a contract for next season provided he reaches an agreement with the Leeds hierarchy.

The Whites have decided to appoint the Spaniard as their next manager, putting a huge managerial saga to bed.

Make him fight for it

Leeds should ideally only give Gracia a deal until the end of the season and then make it worth his while by offering performance based incentives.

He’s coming to the club for one job and one job alone which is to keep Leeds in the Premier League and he’ll get a good payout if he achieves that.

However, under the new ownership, they may choose to go a different way and will then have to pay him off to release him from his contract.

Therefore, it will be easier if they just have a short-term deal and if everyone wants Gracia to continue, he can then negotiate a new contract with better terms.

He should certainly not mind this as it’s pretty fair and if he believes in his credentials as a manager he will accept it.

Giving him a straight up deal until the end of next season could prove to be a risk and it’s one that Leeds must look to avoid.
