Jason Cundy hits back at what Leeds United fan said about Illan Meslier live on air
Illan Meslier has been the focus of many conversations after Leeds United secured a 3-1 victory away to Sheffield United.
Daniel Farke’s men have one foot in the Premier League after the win on Monday night (24 February), though Meslier will be granted little credit for the role he played in the clash.
The Blades took the lead when Meslier parried the ball into his own goal before a trio of goalscorers saw a second-half turnaround at Bramall Lane.
Ao Tanaka, who impressed yet again for Leeds, gave the Whites the lead after Junior Firpo scored the equaliser, with Joel Piroe rounding off the performance with a ferocious long-range effort.
After what was another questionable display from Meslier, his future has come under question yet again.

Meslier becomes the talk of the town again for Leeds
Throughout the campaign, Meslier has been highlighted as the one weakness in this Leeds squad, with a series of errors leading to a number of needless goals conceded.
His performance against Hull was a showcase of the frailties he has in his game, while other mistakes against the likes of Sunderland and Sheffield United have been papered over by the quality of those in front of him.
2024/25 season | Appearances | Saves | Save percentage | Goals conceded | Goals prevented | Clean Sheets |
Illan Meslier | 34 | 55 | 72.4% | 21 | -0.68 | 20 |
During the talkSPORT Sport’s Bar show (24 February, 10:38pm), one Leeds supporter called in to express his belief that the Whites need to move on from the Frenchman, with Jason Cundy providing his immediate response.
Cundy said: “He’s still young though, isn’t he? He has got a rick in him but he’s still in his early 20’s.
“Maybe you’re right, he’s had a great apprenticeship he’s been in Leeds‘ first team for what feels like four/five years. But there is something about him. Either he can be brilliant or flap one in, in the same game.
“They might have to look at that.”

Karl Darlow could be in line for a start
Given the fact that Meslier has been a liability on several occasions, Karl Darlow must be wondering what more he needs to do to get a chance in the first team.
It may also serve as a benefit for Meslier to be taken out of the spotlight momentarily and sit out for a handful of games.
Whether that happens will remain to be seen, but it has to be in the mind of Farke after what was another shaky display from the Frenchman at Bramall Lane.
