Jansson delivers parting statement after Brentford move

Pontus Jansson left the club on Monday, three years after signing from Torino and battling his way into the hearts of the fans.

It was an ignominious ending for the combative player after being labelled a “disruptive influence”  [source: Phil Hay] and getting the briefest of send-offs from an official club statement.

Jansson himself was always outspoken and we didn’t have to wait too long to hear from him. He released a statement on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday morning.

However, anyone hoping for an explanation of what happened behind the scenes would have been left disappointed.

Jansson said he was looking forward to a new adventure at Brentford and that he would “give 100% every day!” There are few Leeds fans who would doubt that despite what happened at the end at Elland Road.

Jansson also thanked Leeds saying, “You took me into your hearts and have been fantastic since Day One.”

He saved his “biggest thanks” for his teammates and said Leeds would “always be a part of me and my family!”

It’s a classy statement from Jansson and one that makes Leeds look a little petty for releasing such a perfunctory statement. We think they got that wrong. You’re not going to get fans on side by pretending Jansson’s contribution to the club wasn’t a significant one.

Jansson will be missed but the club will move on.

His tweet gave Leeds fans a chance to say goodbye properly and plenty took up the opportunity.
