Jamie Redknapp hints at major Marcelo Bielsa and Kalvin Phillips problem at Leeds United

Jamie Redknapp believes that Leeds United have a problem with Kalvin Phillips and Marcelo Bielsa.

The Argentine appeared to start the 25-year-old in defence but brought him off at half-time during the Whites’ 0-0 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion.

After the game, Bielsa tried to explain why he made that decision, but Redknapp revealed on Sky Sports after the match that he thinks there could be issues developing between the pair.

He said: “I think there’s something not quite right. He was definitely detailed to play in defence, but I saw him drift into midfield.

“Needs must sometimes, where you have to do whatever is best for the team, but right now Leeds have other defenders that can do the job.

“He wants to be doing the job he’s doing for England – that comes with frustration and comes, to a certain extent, with ego as well.

“He’ll know right now, after the Euros, people are talking about him, big clubs are courting him, people want him, he doesn’t want to be playing centre-back for Leeds.

“That’s an interesting one. It feels like there’s definitely a clash with him and Bielsa right now.”

Hopefully, there is nothing in this.

This latest incident involving Phillips follows on from last Sunday when the England midfielder was asked why he was playing in defence, and he didn’t have an answer.

However, for Bielsa to take Phillips off in a game is something else entirely as he is arguably one of the Whites’ best players.

Now, he has made it into Gareth Southgate’s squad by playing as a defensive midfielder for the Whites, so you can see why he might be frustrated playing as a centre-back.

Considering that Bielsa was the one who moulded Phillips into the player he is today, it would be a real shame if they were to fall out now and cause disruption in the squad.

Hopefully, whatever little issues they have can be resolved this week as the Whites are now in a relegation battle, and they need results soon, or they could be dragged into the drop zone in the coming weeks.

In other Leeds United news, Tim Sherwood has had a go at Bielsa for his communication skills.
