Jamie Carragher wants Leeds back in the Premier League to help provide ‘more colour, emotion’

The Premier League hasn’t been the same since Leeds United were relegated in 2004. That’s a statement that any neutral could agree with.

The Whites are undoubtedly the biggest and most well-supported team in Yorkshire, even if Sheffield United are the darlings of the top flight at the moment.

The support that they get at Elland Road cannot be equaled in the Championship, and it would likely translate straight back into the Premier League.

Unless you’re a Manchester United fan – and even then Nicky Butt seems to be on board – you want Leeds back mixing it with the big boys.

Former Liverpool stalwart and England international Jamie Carragher is one of those who wants the Whites back.

They’ve been out in the wilderness for too long now, and it’s high time they returned. Under Marcelo Bielsa, it appears they are closer to that goal than ever before.

Carragher wants them to realise their dream: “When the Premier League formed in 1993, clubs such as Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday, Blackburn Rovers and Oldham Athletic joined the powerhouses of Liverpool, Everton and Manchester United,” he wrote in his Daily Telegraph column.

“Leeds might add to the Yorkshire contingent by securing Premier League promotion.

“That will add more colour, emotion and – dare one say – interesting fixtures to the calendar. Such clubs bring passionate supporters who make the game more entertaining for neutrals.  ”

Carragher’s absolutely right. Leeds returning to the top flight would bring a lot more excitement to the Premier League calendar.

No-one has a divine right to play in the best league in the world, of course, but there are some clubs who simply feel like they belong up there.

Leeds are one of those, as were teams like Aston Villa and Newcastle United when they were out of the Premier League. Saturday’s opponents Nottingham Forest are another example.

Having the Whites back tussling with teams like Liverpool, Man United and, indeed, Sheffield United, would be fascinating to watch.
