James Marshment makes Ethan Ampadu position prediction at Leeds United amid £7million update

Leeds United target Ethan Ampadu could be a “really smart” signing for the club due to his versatility and desire, according to TEAMtalk journalist James Marshment.

Ampadu has reportedly completed a £7million move to Elland Road [The Athletic] after a relegation-ending spell in Serie A with Spezia.

The Welshman can play in central defence or in midfield and could be set to replace the departed Marc Roca and prove his quality after being relegated in all of his last three loan spells.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Marshment said: “I think that’s a really smart signing. He’s not had the best record in that he’s suffered three relegations with three different teams in the last three years.

“However, I think he’s a player with a point to prove, and with 44 caps for Wales he’s shown what he’s about he’s got versatility, he can play central defence and a sort-of holding midfielder.

“I believe that is where Farke will try to utilise him. He’s a replacement for Marc Roca and hopefully, someone who can partner Tyler Adams in the midfield.”

Exciting business

Unless something drastic happens, Ampadu looks likely to break the relegation curse that has followed him around England and Italy at Sheffield United, Venezia and most recently Spezia.

Leeds’ eyes are set on the top end of the table, and despite Ampadu’s regular football at poor sides, he can make a real impact in Yorkshire.

Marshment’s claim that he has a point to prove does ring true. Having never made a real impact on the Chelsea first team and a string of unfortunate loans, Ampadu will be very keen to have a successful season.

His versatility will go a long way in him securing minutes. Marshment backs the experienced youngster to replace Roca in the central defensive midfielder role, which he has done on multiple occasions [Transfermarkt]. However, centre-back is his main position and with 2.25 tackles per 90 (90th percentile) and 1.64 blocks per 90 (88th percentile), Ampadu clearly likes to make his presence known to the opposition.

What may be even more appealing to Leeds is his ability to influence the attack. 1.36 shot-creating actions per 90 (94th percentile) and 4.26 progressive passes per 90 (80th percentile) [FBRef] show his creative influence.

From this, it would also make sense to see Ampadu deployed as a defensive midfielder who can influence play and bring goal-threatening players into the match.

Farke will be very impressed and reassured by Ampadu’s numbers while Leeds fans will hope he can give the side the creative edge they missed last season while also bolstering their poor defence.

Ampadu deserves a chance in a winning side after years of fighting against inevitable relegation. He may get his Premier League chance in 2024/25 if he can perform well at Elland Road.
