Jack Harrison sale could be on the cards at Leeds United in summer as Phil Hay shares Leicester City update

Leeds United could consider selling Jack Harrison in the summer due to his contract entering its final 12 months, according to The Athletic’s Phil Hay.

It’s understood Harrison had travelled South to Leicester’s training base to undergo medical tests, just in case a last-gasp deal could have been reached.

Leeds eventually decided to keep hold of the winger but Hay has suggested Leeds may be willing to sell him in the summer to avoid him departing for free a year later.

“Leeds plan to hold talks about a new deal with him in the weeks ahead and hope that Harrison is open to accepting improved terms and staying beyond his present contract,” wrote The Athletic journalist (1 February).

“The reality of football finance is such that if an extension cannot be reached, more consideration would have to be given to selling him when this season finishes, at which point his deal would be only a year away from expiry.

“He has developed too well for Leeds to allow a scenario where Harrison leaves on a free transfer.”

Surprising

Harrison’s form has actually been rather indifferent in the 2022/23 campaign – and it could be considered somewhat of a surprise that Leeds didn’t accept Leicester’s offer. He’s been in and out of the side and certainly not a shoo-in to make a positive impact in the second half of the campaign.

Furthermore, with his contract edging closer to its conclusion, his value will only decrease further. Jesse Marsch clearly views the 26-year-old as a quality option to have within his squad, and letting him depart could well have been viewed as a bit of a risk at present.

The board will now enter contract talks with the winger, and it will be interesting to see if they can come to a conclusion.

Leicester’s wage structure is understood to be larger, and the prospect of a significantly improved salary could be the deal breaker. He’s at an age where he probably only has one more big-money contract left in his career and the Foxes could well provide that opportunity.
