Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is not concerned by Jean-Kevin Augustin’s hamstring injury issue, according to Phil Hay.
However The Athletic journalist has reported that what Bielsa is disappointed with is Augustin’s fitness issues and the fact that he has not been able to bring himself up to speed since joining Leeds on loan from RB Leipzig in January.
Augustin’s loan deal with Leeds ended on Tuesday night but the Whites could still be obliged to sign the French striker if they win promotion to the Premier League.
And based on Hay’s latest reveal in the Phil Hay Show podcast, Bielsa might not fancy having the 22-year-old back at Elland Road permanently.
“I’ve spoken to people on both sides who are adamant that this hamstring is still a problem for him and it is still niggling,” said Hay.
“But I’m not so sure that Bielsa is convinced that it’s a huge issue. I think he’s disappointed by the fact that Augustin has not been able to get himself in line and put himself in the frame to even be on the bench.
“And that’s the long and short of it.”
He added: “It would be a big, big surprise if Leeds and Bielsa want to do this one permanently.”
Bielsa’s right to have that stance on Augustin.
Every player gets injured and sometimes players struggle to recover from hamstring issues, which have been niggling Augustin since March.
He recovered from that issue during the lockdown but does not seem to have recovered to the point where he can meet Bielsa’s fitness requirements.
It just shows that losing Eddie Nketiah in January was a massive blow.
Bielsa does not like signing players in January because he wants his squad to get a full pre-season under their belt with him before the season kicks off.
Augustin never got that whereas Nketiah did.
It might have been a mistake to make such a big signing in Augustin in January but we can see why the club did it based on his record in Germany.
