‘It’s a joke’ – Gary Neville makes Leeds admission, says how they’re better than Liverpool
Manchester United legend Gary Neville has admitted that “it’s a joke” how Leeds United have spent so long outside of the Premier League.
Before football was put on hold due to coronavirus, the Whites were on the march back to the top-flight with a five-match winning run that put them top of the Championship table and seven points clear of third.
Whatever happens in the coming weeks and months in regards to the currently-suspended 2019/20 season, we hope and pray that Leeds’ promotion bid isn’t wrecked by a decision in a boardroom somewhere in London.
Even though Nevile spent his entire career at Leeds’ rivals Man United, he has suggested he would love to see them back in the big-time.
One of the reasons the former right-back seems to want the Whites to go up is the atmosphere that fans generate at Elland Road.
Anfield is often praised as the most atmospheric of grounds in the Premier League but Neville has reserved high praise for Leeds United supporters.
“It’s a joke they have not been in the Premier League for 15 years,” Neville told Sky Sports, as quoted by LeedsLive.
“It was always the number one ground for hostility. Liverpool also had atmosphere as well but in terms of that hostility there was no place better. That rivalry with United was special.”
Neville’s right – there is no stadium better than Elland Road.
It is gutting that fans won’t be able to attend the remaining nine games of the season and maybe even Leeds’ first games back in the Premier League if they get there. You can only imagine how good the atmosphere would have been.
But, still, once fans are allowed to pack Elland Road to the rafters again – whether it’s August, September or some time in 2021 – you know it’s going to be a day to remember.
