Isaac Schmidt question posed for Daniel Farke ahead of Leeds United v Middlesbrough

Beren Cross doesn’t know whether Isaac Schmidt can be trusted to start for Leeds United in their Championship clash against Middlesbrough on Tuesday.

The full-back was brought in during the summer window for around £4.6million and hasn’t yet been afforded much of a run in the first team.

He’s had quite a torrid time with injuries at Elland Road since his arrival and is only now starting to get back to full fitness.

Writing for the LeedsLive website (9 December), journalist Cross shared his thoughts on the potential of the former FC St Gallen man playing against Middlesbrough.

“Isaac Schmidt, who is still waiting for a full debut, is the alternative for Farke [to replace Jayden Bogle],” he wrote.

“Neither Schmidt or Byram will be match-sharp after contrasting spells on the sidelines recently, but the latter’s injury record will be on Farke’s mind.

“In a match of this importance, can the German trust Schmidt in his first start?”

Daniel Farke has some tough Leeds United decisions to make

The fact both Junior Firpo and Jayden Bogle could both be out for Tuesday’s clash against Boro is far from an ideal situation for the Whites.

Michael Carrick’s men have been in decent form this season and could well be one of the toughest tests they’ve faced this season.

Indeed, they currently sit fifth in the table and are seven points adrift of Leeds, but if they manage to come away from Elland Road with all three points to their name, they’ll be within touching distance of the top two spots.

Sam Byram also being a doubt is another concern and while Max Wober would likely be able to put in a shift at left-back now he’s back to full fitness, it’s still a tough call for Farke to make.

If Schmidt is chosen, this could be one of the only games he has to prove his talent to the German and, if he performs to a decent standard, he could find himself being chosen more regularly.
