Injury expert: Five Newcastle players could miss Premier League fixture v Leeds United
Newcastle United could be without five players for their Premier League clash against Leeds United as the Magpies sweat over Callum Wilson’s fitness.
According to injury expert Ben Dinnery (Premier Injuries website), Jonjo Shelvey, Alexander Isak, Emil Krafth, and Paul Dummett are all out of the fixture at St James’ Park on Saturday (31 December).
Eddie Howe is also sweating on Callum Wilson’s fitness after the in-form striker missed the Magpies’ 3-0 win over Leicester City in their last Premier League fixture.
“I know Callum very, very well, obviously, and he’d only rule himself out of a game if he knew he couldn’t do the team justice in terms of what he needed to do physically. We hope he recovers quickly,” said the Newcastle boss (Sheilds Gazette, 28 December).
It certainly promises to be a tough test for Jesse Marsch’s side as they make the trip to the North East to face the Premier League high-flyers. The Magpies have been sensational in the 2022/23 campaign and are likely to only go from strength to strength in the coming months.
They’ve recruited sensible and have certainly exceeded all expectations so far this season as they look to break into the top four and secure Champions League football for the 2023/24 campaign.
A full St James’ Park promises to be an intimidating test of Marsch’s men, but they’ve been relatively impressive against the better sides in the Premier League this season. They’ve beaten Liverpool and Chelsea and were extremely unlucky not to have taken points off of Arsenal in their clash at Elland Road.
A similar type of performance is certainly required when they meet on New Year’s Eve in the North East. Let’s hope it’s a memorable end to 2022 for the Whites.
