'Incredible' - Noel Whelan wowed by Leeds player as BBC journo makes £10m claim after 2-0 win
Noel Whelan was blown away by Raphinha’s performance for Leeds United in their 2-0 win against Crystal Palace at Elland Road on Monday night.
Leeds shot up to 10th in the Premier League standings with the win as Jack Harrison and Patrick Bamford found the back of the net in each half.
BBC Radio Leeds journalist Jonathan Buchan claimed after the match that Raphinha was so good his value increased by up to £10million just based on his display versus Palace.
“Raphinha is something else,” Buchan said on BBC Radio Leeds [BBC Sounds, 8m40s] on Monday night.
“When we walked out of the ground after the Everton game and when we spoke after the Leicester game as well, we said, ‘he’s added £5million on there, he’s added another £5million on there’. Well tonight, he’s added another £5million or £10million on hasn’t he?”
Ex-Leeds star Whelan then offered his thoughts on Raphinha’s performance, suggesting that the Brazilian winger simply has everything.
Whelan said: “He’s just incredible to watch. His confidence, his first touch, his agility, his ability to drive at players, his vision of a pass, his weight of a pass and the striker he had nearly broke [Vicente] Guaita’s arm off but it landed to Patrick Bamford who was just doing his job.
“He’s a threat all the time but not just that, I’ve seen him busting a gut, sprinting back to help his team-mates. He’s involved in everything.
“He’s such a pleasure to watch and showed some unbelievable skill out there. The nutmeg on Gary Cahill, that nearly sent him into early retirement.
“He does something out of the ordinary and exciting to get you out of your seat.”
Liverpool nowhere near with reported bid planned
Raphinha is all the rage at the moment.
Since touching down in Yorkshire in October, the former Rennes winger has scored four goals and supplied four assists in 18 appearances for the Whites and left countless Premier League defenders left scratching their heads about how to deal with him.
As expected, transfer speculation is starting to swirl around the 24-year-old with Liverpool being linked with a move for him in the summer.
Spanish news outlet Fichajes reports that Jurgen Klopp is readying a £35million bid for Raphinha at the end of the season but based on Buchan’s assessment, there’s absolutely no way that will be anywhere near enough.
Leeds paid £17million for Raphinha in October and the winger agreed a four-year contract when he arrived.
That means that already, he’s going to be valued way more than what Leeds paid for him – and that was before he tore up Premier League defences on a weekly basis.
Liverpool can offer £35million if they want but it won’t be accepted. Raphinha’s showing the level of potential that would suggest he’s worth well over £50million at the moment.
