Leeds United fans have been getting very excited about a potential move for Udinese midfielder Rodrigo de Paul, since the news was broken by Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath last week.

But this hasn’t come out of the blue.

Atheltic journalist Phil Hay said that Leeds weren’t denying it and now, Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth has taken that one step further.

Responding to a Leeds fan on Twitter, Smyth said that De Paul “has been on ‘the list’ since the start, I’m told, so the interest is very real.”

Curveballs from Leeds

Leeds have played a very canny game so far this summer.

After saying that they were focusing on players from the Championship, and putting out feelers for players like Said Benrahma and Ollie Watkins, Leeds have already thrown two curveballs in Rodrigo and Robin Koch.

De Paul would be the third and if his name has been on ‘the list’ since the start, Leeds have done a brilliant job of keeping him out of the newspapers.

It’s out now, though, and the question is whether Leeds can land him or if other big clubs will come in for him.

Sister stats site All Stats Aren’t We put out a tweet that shows just how big a signing De Paul could be.

Listed as an attacking midfielder by TransferMarkt, De Paul offers so much more and has played in a huge number of different positions.

He spent most of last season operating out of central midfield but, as SmaterScout pointed out, not only has he got a big attacking return from this position but he also delivers as a defender too.

If we asked Siri to describe a Bielsa midfielder, this would be it.
