Illan Meslier stuns Ally McCoist in ‘remarkable’ Leeds United moment vs Leicester City

Ally McCoist was left stunned by Illan Meslier after the Leeds United goalkeeper produced a “remarkable” save to deny Kelechi Iheanacho during the 1-1 draw with Leicester City.

Luis Sinisterra’s opener at Elland Road was cancelled out by a Jamie Vardy strike to leave both teams firmly engulfed in the battle to avoid relegation.

But Meslier pulled off a fine double stop to deny the former Manchester City man early on in the second half and McCoist was full of praise for the 23-year-old.

“I don’t care, what a save that is,” said McCoist (BT Sport, 21:32, 25 April).

“Whether he’s offside or not, this is a remarkable save. He’s up and makes himself big, it’s a brilliant stop. It’s a great block.”

Perfect answer

What a way for Meslier to answer his critics. The Frenchman’s shot-stopping was superb against Dean Smith’s side and it was the perfect way for him to respond after conceding 13 goals in the space of three games. There were many who wanted Joel Robles to start, but Javi Gracia’s decision was vindicated.

There’s certainly a lot for the 23-year-old to work on, with his handling from crosses still relatively suspect. Nonetheless, his performance on Tuesday evening will give him plenty of confidence moving forward.

On the whole, a point isn’t an awful result, but considering Leeds were playing at home, Gracia will be extremely disappointed not to have picked up all three, particularly after leading for much of the encounter. With Bournemouth next up, there’s very little room for error.

The performance against the Foxes was certainly improved and it’s now essential for the Whites to get back to winning ways against Gary O’Neil’s side on Sunday (30 April).
