Illan Meslier named in WhoScored Team of the Week after Leeds United heroics v Aston Villa

Illan Meslier made a handful of wonderful saves to ensure Leeds United left Elland Road with a clean sheet on Sunday afternoon.

Leeds United’s clash against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon wasn’t one for the football purists. The game was largely impacted by the referee, who awarded a whopping 35 fouls.

It ended up being a very scrappy and slow game, but one in which Meslier shone by making seven saves – including an incredible stop against Ollie Watkins late on.

As a reward for his efforts, Meslier was handed an 8.36 rating on WhoScored, earning him a spot in the team of the week.

Key player

Had it not been for Meslier on Sunday, then there’s a good chance Leeds could’ve left empty-handed against Villa.

He was a mountainous figure in between the sticks, and superbly organised a defence that was forced to sit back after Luis Sinisterra’s sending off early on in the second half.

Meslier is now enjoying his fourth season in Yorkshire after joining initially on a loan deal and then permanently in 2020. In that time he has become a key player for Leeds, and yet he’s still only 22 years old.

The French shot-stopper has plenty of years to improve, yet he’s still a standout star in the Premier League. His performances haven’t gone unnoticed either, with The Athletic’s Phil Hay [The Phil Hay Show] reporting that Tottenham are interested in his signature.

Leeds have to do whatever they can to keep Meslier at Elland Road. He’s up there among the best goalkeepers in the league and is a long-term prospect as well as a current star.

As Marsch slowly improves the defence, Meslier’s records will only improve more.
