Illan Meslier Leeds United exit to escalate after latest Elland Road transfer update

Leeds United have been linked with a move for Club Brugge goalkeeper Senne Lammens – and that could raise some eyebrows when it comes to Illan Meslier’s future.

HLN journalist Tomas Taecke has suggested (personal Twitter account, 8 January) the 20-year-old keeper is on his way to Elland Road. It’s surprising to see the club linked with another young keeper, with potentially an older head to rival Meslier being a more favourable option.

So, should the Elland Road faithful be concerned about the links to Lammens?

It does seem a little bit strange for the club to be looking at a keeper who is very much in the same mould as Meslier and this could potentially be some long-term planning from the board in case the highly-rated Frenchman does depart West Yorkshire.

RMC Sport reported (3 January) that Newcastle and Bayern Munich have joined the race for the 22-year-old who has enjoyed a fine season for Leeds. Foot Mercato have also revealed the Whites could struggle to keep hold of Meslier, with Chelsea also in the hunt for his services.

It’s clear Leeds have one of the hottest prospects in the Premier League in their ranks and he will undoubtedly continue to attract attention if he continues to perform to his current levels.

Lammens would be a longer-term project should he make the move to Elland Road, but links to the Club Brugge man could well indicate the board are protecting themselves in case a huge bid for Meslier does arrive.

Meslier departing would be a tough one to take but could be hard for the board to prevent if the likes of Newcastle or Chelsea submit a big-money bid.

In other Leeds United news, a headline-making player who is linked with a move to Elland Road desperately wants a Premier League transfer in January.
