Illan Meslier hints at stance on Leeds United future amid fresh Elland Road exit speculation
Illan Meslier has admitted he will take time to think about his Leeds United future as speculation over a move away from Elland Road continues to swirl.
The Times reported (14 March) the 23-year-old is on Chelsea’s shortlist of keepers as Todd Boehly continues to provide Graham Potter with significant backing at Stamford Bridge.
The Frenchman has since responded to the speculation and has admitted he has to be performing to a high level to attract interest from potential suitors.
“It would be a mistake to project oneself so far. There are many steps before that: a continuation of the project with Leeds, the Euro [U21 championship] in June,” said Meslier (Ouest France, pg 28, 27 March).
“To succeed in all of this, I have to be good. Because no one will come looking for me if I am not. And if I am asked, I will take the time to think about my future with a clear head.”

A 23-year-old goalkeeper with international and Premier League experience will be sought-after. The Frenchman has been an important part of Leeds’ starting eleven for a long time and probably feels he’s deserving of a big-money move in the future.
If Meslier does depart, It’s absolutely essential the club recoup his full value. He’s contracted to the Yorkshire side until 2026 which means Leeds stand a good chance of landing a hefty fee if there is interest in the summer.
The club’s younger prospects have been extremely promising during the 2022/23 season but there’s always a chance of them being poached by those with more financial muscle.
At present, a departure for Meslier seems unlikely, but if Leeds are relegated to the Championship, then there’s a chance they could be forced into cashing in on the France under-21 international. Unfortunately, the prospect of playing Championship football could see a number of players seek exits if the unthinkable happens.
