Ilia Gruev surgery update emerges as message sent to Leeds United fans

Ilia Gruev has sent a positive message to Leeds United fans from his hospital bed after undergoing surgery on a new injury.

Graham Smyth dropped the news that Daniel Farke’s midfielder would be unavailable for months, having to undergo surgery, and a post-surgery image has now emerged.

With Ethan Ampadu also set to be sidelined until January [Yorkshire Evening Post], the Whites have been dealt several injury blows in such a short space of time, though Gruev looked to provide some positivity.

Posing in a hospital bed, Gruev posted an image of himself via Instagram Stories on Saturday (5 October), writing: “I will be back soon!” with a muscle emoji.

Losing both Ampadu and Gruev so close together has been an incredible blow for Farke and Leeds’ promotion hopes this season.

Of course, the likes of Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell can provide plenty of experience and backup to the injured duo, but there is no doubt Leeds’ side has been weakened significantly.

Farke has already mooted the potential idea of signing a free agent due to the new blows while the January transfer window offers the Whites a different avenue to reinforce the midfield.

Gruev took quite a while to settle into life at Elland Road after arriving from Werder Bremen last summer, but he has now emerged as one of Farke’s most important stars.

The whole of Elland Road will be supporting him as he begins rehabilitation on the new injury blow.
