Ian Wright stunned by rarely-seen Leeds United footage on Match of the Day
Ian Wright was blown away after analysing footage of Leeds United during the Whites’ 2-2 draw against Newcastle United.
Goals from Luke Ayling and Rasmus Kristensen saw the Whites secure a vital point to keep their survival hopes alive.
Talking on Match of the Day, Wright was left impressed with the Whites’ “Bielsa-like” pressing during the draw with Eddie Howe’s side.
“It was working, they were very intense, they went at Newcastle closing them down,” said Wright (Match of the Day, 13m 41s, 13 May).
“The closing down and the work that they must have put in this week is probably why Sam Allardyce feels they should’ve got three points.
“It’s the intensity and it’s something we haven’t seen. They look co-ordinated and know what they’re doing.
“Look at Rodrigo’s pressing, it’s very much Bielsa-like.”
Impressive
There have clearly been improvements under Sam Allardyce. The two fixtures against Manchester City and Newcastle were extremely daunting on paper and for the Whites to come away disappointed speaks volumes. The players have to show more discipline in the key moments.
Quite what Max Wober was trying to do for Newcastle’s first spot kick is a mystery. And the less said about Junior Firpo’s handball the better. It’s these moments which will define Leeds’ season. The upcoming clash against West Ham United is now a must-win for Allardyce’s side. They cannot afford to slip up.
With Nottingham Forest picking up a point against Chelsea, nothing has changed when it comes to the battle to avoid the drop. Leeds could really do with Manchester City doing them a favour when they travel to Goodison Park to face Everton on Sunday afternoon.
The Toffees are just one point above Leeds having played one game more.
In other Leeds United news, one Whites ace was “furious”, and a coach had told a Sky Sports pundit he had been “sulking”.
