Ian Wright slams Leeds United duo Robin Koch and Liam Cooper on Match of the Day

Leeds United were let down by their defence again on Saturday as they surrendered a late lead to Tottenham to lose 4-3.

Leeds United were on the brink of winning three consecutive league fixtures on Saturday afternoon, but a late brace from Spurs midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur sunk the Whites in North London.

It was another poor defensive showing from Jesse Marsch’s side, and two players in particular came under fire from Ian Wright after the full-time whistle.

Speaking on Match of the Day on BBC One on Saturday night (12 November, 31m10s), Wright said: “Look at this one-two, look at [Liam] Cooper, [Robin] Koch coming across.

“This is a poor challenge.

“He’s got to hold him up, he’s got to do something. Look at that, [Kulusevksi has] walked past him.

“Cooper should be getting back but he’s not even busting a gut to get back to Bentancur and he just slips it in.”

Fragile

Leeds have now conceded 26 goals in just 14 league games – a record of almost two goals conceded every match. It’s an unsustainable record and something that Marsch needs to address immediately.

Thankfully, the Whites have rediscovered their scoring touch, but recent weeks have looked very similar to the chaos witnessed under Marcelo Bielsa last season.

Games are getting out of control, and while Leeds are happy to open up games and go toe-to-toe, the side lack quality defenders to deal with it.

Scoring three goals away from home has to be enough to at least earn a draw, but sloppy defending and individual mistakes at the back cost Leeds again.

Leeds’ tendency to open up games and go from end to end is extremely fun and chaotic to watch, but they’re hurting themselves by not learning how to kill games off. Marsch tried to by bringing on Luke Ayling towards the end of the match, but the defence was still far too fragile and disorganised to get the team over the line.

It’s a flaw that desperately needs addressing over the World Cup break.

In other Leeds United news, Gary Neville will be furious with a massive development at Elland Road this week.
