Ian Wright was unimpressed by Ezgjan Alioski’s physical approach as Leeds United lost 4-2 away at Arsenal on Sunday.
Alioski, 29, had a torrid time at left-back at the Emirates and was substituted off by Marcelo Bielsa in the 53rd minute.
The North Macedonia international struggled to cope with Arsenal’s attackers, mainly Bukayo Sako.
Gunners legend Wright has been defensive of Saka and wasn’t very happy with Alioski’s attempts to handle him on Sunday.
“I take real umbrage to anybody fouling him [Saka],” said Wright on the most recent episode of the Wrighty’s House podcast.
“When we saw what Alioski was trying to do with him in this game, he was kicking him all over the place. He was kicking him.”
Wright’s not the only one
Alioski’s performances as of late have not been anywhere near good enough.
In a way, we do feel a bit of sympathy towards the 29-year-old, whose deal at Elland Road expires at the end of the season.
It’s his first year in the Premier League and he’s had to make do as a mainstay at left-back in Bielsa’s team when he’s much more natural as an attacker.
Stuart Dallas can perform well in the left-back spot but the Northern Ireland international has been needed in other areas of the squad this season due to centre-back and central midfield injury issues.
Once those issues allay, it’s likely that we’ll see Alioski lose his spot in the side but he’s still been a regular for Bielsa this season and is likely to continue playing regularly and adding to his 21 top-flight appearances so far.
He was a bit of a loose cannon versus Arsenal on Sunday.
Whether that was because he was hyped up for the battle against Nicolas Pepe or simply that the Gunners attackers were on-song.
Saka is a great player and one that really knew how to found a way past the Leeds defence on Sunday.
He targetted Alioski, who is definitely the weak-link defensively and more often than not, the Arsenal man came out on top despite being roughed up.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites blew Leicester out the water to sign this player in the summer.
