Ian Wright singles out Kalvin Phillips after England draw v Poland

Ian Wright has singled out Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips after England conceded late to draw 1-1 with Poland last night.

Robert Lewandowski was given all the time in the world to lob a cross to the back post which was converted by Damian Szymanski.

Analysing the footage after the game, Wright questioned Phillips and how tired he was when closing down the Bayern Munich talisman.

Speaking after the game on ITV, Wright initially praised the performance of Phillips but was left scratching his head at one moment.

“You could see right at the end there,” he said.

“He looked a little bit tired, and couldn’t get to him quick enough. When you don’t get to a player of that quality quick enough, he’s going to put the ball into an area where someone causes problems.”

Tired.

It has been a gruelling week for Phillips and England.

Trips to Hungary and Poland don’t look massively hard on paper, but they both offer testing atmospheres and high relentless pressure to succeed.

Being relatively new to the international scene, despite winning England Player of the Year, it will still test any player.

Could Gareth Southgate had made changes to keep this lead in tact, in all fairness, you could see how tired Phillips was with this late challenge.

With Liverpool to come on Sunday, it is a short turnaround for the Yorkshire Pirlo who will need to be ready for another huge test.

We have no doubt he will be at his best and ready to go, a full Elland Road is awaiting him and Patrick Bamford after yet another successful week away.
