Ian Wright reacts as Patrick Bamford earns England call-up

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has been called up by England for next month’s World Cup qualifiers against Hungary, Poland and Andorra.

The 27-year-old missed out on the European Championship squad in the summer but has been handed a huge boost ahead of next summer’s World Cup.

Bamford will be more than eager to prove himself to Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate during the games in September, and Arsenal legend Ian Wright has sent him this message on his personal Twitter account after the call-up.

“Fantastic news, Pat,” said Wright.

Absolutely deserved

The Leeds ace scored 17 Premier League goals and assisted another seven in 38 games last term, and he would have been very gutted not to have even made the Euros preliminary squad.

Making the 25-man squad for next month’s qualifiers does not guarantee a spot in the World Cup team, but it gives him the chance to prove himself for the national team selectors.

Whites head coach Marcelo Bielsa has turned Bamford into one of the best strikers in the land, and the player will strive to keep getting better.

With the likes of Harry Kane, Danny Ings, Ollie Watkins and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to regularly challenge for a spot in the Three Lions team, the Elland Road hero has to constantly be on top of his game this season and surpass the numbers he returned last term.

Getting on the plane heading to Qatar in the summer will be tough, but Bamford has the quality and will be more than keen to show everyone what he is capable of doing in front of goal again this season.
