‘I can’t resist’ – Stan Collymore revels in Marcelo Bielsa sacking at Leeds

Stan Collymore has been gloating in his latest Mirror column about the sacking of Marcelo Bielsa as Leeds manager following the arrival of Jesse Marsch.

Bielsa was sacked on Sunday after a 4-0 loss to Tottenham on Saturday made it nine losses in 12 games, with the Whites just two points above the relegation zone now.

But while Leeds fans are gutted about the board’s decision to part ways with the Argentine, Collymore has had a parting shot at the 66-year-old and says new boss Marsh is essentially starting from scratch defensively.

“Following Bielsa’s sacking by Leeds, I can’t resist reminding those of you who had him down as the Second Coming because he won promotion to the Premier League then took them to ninth place that I’ve been saying for some time now that he isn’t,” he stated.

“It has been obvious that Bielsa was the only one who couldn’t see the flaws, or at least work them out, in his system.

“And, by the way, Sean Dyche took Burnley up with a smaller budget, and has kept them there, yet I’ve never heard the same said about him.

“Now Jesse Marsch will inherit a group of players who he will have to teach from scratch how to defend. He will also have to breathe confidence into them and add flexibility to their play.”

Collymore may not get it, but Leeds fans will always love Bielsa and that’s because he made them believe again.

It wasn’t just the fact that he got them promotion, it was the style of football he played and the fearlessness he showed in sticking to his philosophies.

It gave the fans belief and a love for football once again after years of struggling and disappointment. But in the same breath, Collymore is also right about the fact he did have big flaws in his style.

He did really struggle with the defensive setup against the Premier League sides and with 60 goals conceded so far this season the problems were evident for all to see.

His exit was inevitable and it’s no surprise Collymore has taken his chance to gloat, but it doesn’t make him any more right just because Bielsa was sacked. Don’t expect to see Leeds fans being nice to Collymore at any point soon.
