‘I can understand’ – Illan Meslier responds to criticism of Leeds in Premier League

Illan Meslier has admitted that he can “understand” why Leeds United are picking up criticism for their attacking style this season in the Premier League.

The Whites were torn apart by certain parts of the media this weekend after crashing to a 6-2 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Meslier believes that these types of critics and pundits come out every time that Leeds fall to defeat in the Premier League.

Speaking to BBC West Yorkshire Sport on Wednesday, Meslier claimed that people will forget about the last game if the Whites can beat Burnley and West Brom.

“Of course, I can understand this view,” he said. “In this situation, and this type of people because if we concede six goals, it is not possible, but it’s one game, and after, if we win, the people forget the loss against Manchester United because we are taking six points.”

Leeds may have conceded six against the Red Devils, but the scoreline would have been much closer if they had put their own chances away.

Patrick Bamford, Jack Harrison and Raphinha were all guilty of missing huge chances, all after Meslier had pulled off some impressive saves.

Marcelo Bielsa will be disappointed how his side shipped so many chances and goals, and did admit that they would work hard to put that right.

Nobody was complaining about this style when the Whites destroyed Newcastle in a similar manner only a matter of days beforehand though.

Chris Sutton labelled the approach as “embarrassing” at Old Trafford, but we suspect he would have been a massive fan if Leeds had come away with three points.

It is always one extreme to the other with reactions, but Meslier and Leeds appear to be remaining calm – something we will need to continue picking up points at this level, we can’t afford to panic because of one result.
