Huge talent Georginio Rutter £35million fee based on potential as Leeds United chase deal

Georginio Rutter is a “huge talent” and his mooted fee is tied to future potential as Leeds United pursue a major January deal, according to Ronan Murphy.

The Whites are aiming for the 20-year-old Hoffenheim forward as an answer to their lack of a central striker to cover for the often-injured Patrick Bamford.

According to Sky Germany reporter on Saturday (7 January) Florian Plettenberg the youngster is open to the move but the fee for what could be a “massive” deal is thought to be around €35million to €40million [£30million to £35million], and FootballTransfers.com journalist Murphy that is due to his major potential more than the player he is now.

Murphy wrote on Twitter after the report from Plettenberg: “Leeds interested in Georginio Rutter this month, according to Plettigoal.

“Flagged him as one of the Bundesliga players to watch at the start of the season. He’s a huge talent, but the fee or €30m-€40m seems more tied to potential than current ability.”

Risk?

Shelling out such a big fee based on projections for the future may be nothing for the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea but Leeds United are not currently in that boat.

However, they do have to scope out the stars of the future ahead of time in order to land them before the giants of European football hoover everyone up.

So there is a gamble to every major signing that the club makes currently, but it is heightened that much more when the money involved is this significant.

Rutter has 11 goals and eight assists in all competitions from his time at Bundesliga side Hoffenheim, but only turned 20 towards the end of last season.

The German top flight has become a hotbed for the next generation of talent in recent years and clearly the Whites feel that the under-21 international will prove himself worth the investment.

It may not be the established senior forward that a lot of fans have long been calling for to substitute for Bamford, but if Rutter’s talent is a “huge” as Murphy suggests then it could be a masterstroke.

In other Leeds United news, a Saturday social media post has shown a player at the airport as he jets off to complete a move.
