Huge Leeds United commercial opportunity awaits in July – David Ornstein

Leeds United are expected to be included in a brand new USA-based “pre-season tournament”, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

Ornstein reports (The Athletic, 10 April) that Aston Villa, Brentford, Brighton and Hove Albion, Chelsea and Newcastle United are all set to be involved.

It’s believed the Yorkshire side are also expected to be included, but their participation depends heavily on their Premier League status.

It’s understood the “Summer Series” will be held in cities and stadiums in US’s eastern time zone towards the end of July, with the tournament presenting a “huge” opportunity for the clubs to expand their commercial appeal.

Make sense

Considering the Whites’ links to America, it’s no surprise to see them participate. The Premier League is clearly trying to expand its reach and with football emerging in the US, it’s an excellent country to grow and develop the Leeds United brand.

Opportunities like this highlight further the significance of Premier League football. If Leeds are relegated to the Championship, prospects such as this won’t be readily available. Javi Gracia simply has to get his side to perform after their humiliation against Crystal Palace.

No one saw that second half coming, with Roy Hodgson’s side ripping through Leeds with ease. The players were naive and it’s something they must learn from. With Palace, West Ham and Bournemouth all winning, the battle to beat the drop has taken yet another twist.

The upcoming fixture against Liverpool is almost a free hit, but the following matches against Leicester, Fulham and Bournemouth will have a big impact on which division Leeds will be in next season.

In other Leeds United news, Roy Keane has slammed this player after what he did against Crystal Palace.
