Harry Redknapp names Leeds United duo Illan Meslier and Brenden Aaronson in team of the week

Harry Redknapp has named Leeds United duo Illan Meslier and Brenden Aaronson in his team of the week following the 2-1 win over Wolves on the opening day.

The Whites came from behind to claim 3 points in the Premier League thanks to goals from Rodrigo and an own-goal by Rayan Ait-Nouri, but turned in a good performance that impressed the former Premier League manager.

And Redknapp, speaking to BetVictor, was impressed enough to name Meslier and Aaronson in his side and even claiming that the goalkeeper saved his side while Aaronson suits the team perfectly.

“Leeds looked lively against Wolves on Saturday, but they had their goalkeeper to thank on more than one occasion,” he said.

“Meslier saved them a few times, including a crucial one just before the break. He makes himself big, which all good keepers’ do. He looks very solid in there.

“Leeds manager, Jesse Marsch, looks like he’s picked up a cracker in Brenden Aaronson.

“They know each other well having worked together at Salzburg, and you can see why Marsch has brought him in. He suits Leeds perfectly. Loads of energy, a constant threat. He got his goal as well, so he’ll be delighted with his Premier League debut.”

There were plenty of question marks surrounding the Leeds squad this season because of the huge turnover in playing staff this summer.

The sales of Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips were obviously big moments, but Marsch has strengthened his squad with plenty of signings to be able to adapt to the style of play he wants to see at Elland Road this season.

Meslier is established as the number one goalkeeper and despite being just 22-years-old is already clearly a Premier League calibre player.

He will continue to be a key player in this side and his shot stopping and distribution are huge elements to the style that Marsch wants, while Aaronson provides a huge goal threat and his direct style is seen as the perfect replacement for Raphinha.

Now Leeds can look to build on the weekend win when they travel to face Southampton in their next Premier League game, where they can prove Rio Ferdinand right.
