Harry Gray’s new contract explained as regulations may concern Leeds fans

The Gray dynasty continues to live on at Leeds United, after the latest update on Harry.

On Tuesday afternoon, Leeds announced a new contract for Gray, as the Whites are hopeful the 17-year-old can follow in the footsteps of his brother, Archie Gray.

There are significant hopes for the young striker, as talks were in place for Gray to sign a Leeds extension for just a short time until a deal was agreed.

However, with previous interest in Gray from Tottenham, regulations set out in his contract could still concern the Whites.

Leeds limited to Harry Gray contract extension length

Gray has been a top performer for Leeds‘ youth academy, and performed so well that he has earned a spot playing for England’s Under-17s.

He made his professional debut in April last season, as the striker came off the bench in Leeds’ 6-0 victory over Stoke to seal Championship promotion.

According to The Players’ Agent, Clause 18 in FIFA’s Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (2010) details how Gray‘s new contract can be understood.

Inside clause 18, it states, “Players under the age of 18 may not sign a professional contract for a term longer than three years. Any clause referring to a longer period shall not be recognised.”

With that said, Leeds will need to do one thing when he turns 18, so that fans’ concerns can be put to rest.

Leeds need to offer Gray another contract on his 18th birthday

As soon as Gray turns 18, Leeds will be eligible to offer him a more sensational contract.

Gray’s case is the same as his brother’s, as Leeds made the right decision in offering the latter an extended contract on his 18th birthday.

With interest still present, and Gray still bang in from, Leeds have plenty of time to keep the striker on board, but he needs to see more minutes to reassure him of a future at Elland Road.

Gray is a top talent and looks like the youngster in Leeds’ academy who holds the most potential.

Who knows? If Dominic Calvert-Lewin continues to fail, Gray could get a chance sooner rather than later.
