Harry Gray mania reaching fever pitch away from Leeds as Rotherham inundated with requests

Leeds United loanee Harry Gray is impressing for Rotherham, despite the Millers’ struggles at the bottom end of League One.

The versatile forward made the move across Yorkshire during the January transfer window, and has scored twice in eight appearances for the club.

The Gray family runs deep in Leeds history, with the 17-year-old the son of Andy Gray – grandson and nephew of Frank Gray and Eddie Gray.

Harry’s brother, Archie, impressed in the Championship for Leeds during the 2023-24 season, earning himself a move to Tottenham.

But Leeds are determined not to let this one slip, with the exciting youngster sent out on loan for game time as he looks to break into the starting XI at Elland Road.

Harry Gray is impressing for Rotherham – What has Matt Hanshaw said?

It goes without saying that it has been an incredibly poor season for Rotherham.

The Millers sit 23rd in the League One standings, three points from safety, and on track to play in the fourth tier for the first time since the 2012-13 term.

However, Gray has impressed since arriving on loan, despite his tally of just two goals.

Speaking to The Athletic, Rotherham manager Matt Hanshaw said: “There were a few eyebrows raised when a 17-year-old kid came here. Leeds fans think a lot of him.

“I know there’s a lot of media hype around him and we must get 60 scout requests every week. He’s a big talent with a big future.”

The report says this is a 20-fold increase in scout requests prior to Gray’s arrival midway through the season.

Since arriving in January, Gray has started each of Rotherham’s eight matches, scoring his first goal in a 2-1 win against Northampton Town.

“I won’t say it’s a difficult position,” added Hanshaw. “But the fact he’s come in at this point speaks volumes about the kid. He could well have gone somewhere else, sat on the bench and not come on.

“You see how much it means to him at the end. I just spoke to him then about not going down to the floor at the end of a game, for example.

“They’re the little bits he just needs to learn, but that’s why Leeds have obviously entrusted us with his development.”

The 17-year-old will remain in South Yorkshire until the end of the season, when Leeds will decide what is best for his future once again.

Leeds will hope to avoid similar Archie Gray fate

Currently out on loan at Rotherham, Gray is a potential future star for Leeds, and the club will hope that he doesn’t follow the same path as brother Archie, who made the switch to Tottenham in the summer of 2024 after an impressive season in the Championship.

Leeds are well placed to go on and secure their Premier League survival, the hope will be that Gray’s progression keeps pace and that Daniel Farke can slot him seamlessly into the first team sooner rather than later.

The crucial factor, though, is that Leeds are able to offer a level of football high enough – something that they were not able to provide for brother Archie.

Following in the footsteps of some big names at the club, seeing another Gray in form for Leeds would mean the world to supporters, and they simply cannot let this one slip as they did almost two years ago.
