Gus Poyet highlights where Leeds United need to strengthen ahead of January window
Gus Poyet thinks Leeds United should look to strengthen in midfield and attack in the January transfer window.
As always in the busy world of football, attentions are already turning to the winter window, despite it being less than two months since the summer one closed and Leeds will already be identifying players required to boost their chances of promotion.
The Whites currently occupy fifth place in the Championship and Poyet has identified the areas he believes his former club need to improve.
Speaking to Football League World (10 October), former Leeds assistant manager Poyet said: “I would look at the midfield and striker area as with so many games, it’s important to get goals.
“Defensively, Leeds have been good, so with small margins now between the top sides challenging for promotion, goals win games and to have goals in the side and off the bench are important.”
Leeds need to add a consistent goalscorer
Joel Piroe currently leads the goal charts for the club with four goals, with the next highest return at two and it is certainly an area that, if improved, could ignite a serious title push for Daniel Farke’s side.

Piroe more often than not has been utilised as a number 10 but after Georginio Rutter was not outright replaced following his summer move to Brighton the Duthcman has played more as a central striker when utilised this term.
Mateo Joseph has worked hard but has yet to properly hit the goal trail, while experienced campaign Patrick Bamford has had fitness issues, so moving for another out-and-out striker could prove to be a crucial piece of business for Leeds.
Strikers notoriously cost more than they are perhaps worth, meaning the club may have to pay slightly over the odds to get what they want.
However, when it could be the difference between promotion and not, it’s a risk that Leeds should be taking as the long-term positives massively outweigh the short-term implications.
