Gregg Berhalter set for USA contract talks after success with Leeds United star Tyler Adams

Gregg Berhalter could be interested in exploring European club options after an impressive show in the World Cup by the USA led by Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams.

According to a report from ESPN [7 December], the USA soccer federation is prepared to begin talks on a new contract with Berhalter, although it’s still very early in the process.

His existing deal expires at the end of the year and it is unclear what his next move will be.

Major role

The US finished second in the group stages behind England, and they were knocked out by the Netherlands in the round of 16.

Berhalter, who was a former US international, is taking time to consider his future, but it will be a huge blow for players like Adams and Brenden Aaronson if he moves on.

He took charge of the national side in 2018 after USA failed to qualify for the World Cup. He did a terrific job in building a squad with young players like Adams, Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and others.

Adams was outstanding in the World Cup in Qatar and he showed what a top player he is. Most importantly, he showed great leadership skills, both on and off the pitch, and Jesse Marsch must have taken note of that.

The 23-year-old earned rich praise from pundits after he produced a stellar performance in the 0-0 draw against England. Leeds fans will hope that he will continue his impressive form for the Whites as well in the second half of the campaign.

Fox Sports Tv analyst Stu Holden wrote on 25 November that Adams will be off to a top-level Champions League team next summer if he continues to dazzle, but Yorkshire Evening Post journalist, Graham Smyth has allayed those fears.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are now scouting an attacker at the World Cup and a January move appears to be on the cards for them.
