Gray reacts to Frank Lampard picture as Leeds United ace watches Coventry heartbreak

Leeds United have already secured promotion to the Premier League and were grateful to avoid the play-offs again.

Leeds slipped into the play-off places during a bad spell of form back in March, and having to go through a two-legged semi-final to reach Wembley again would have been far from ideal.

Coventry City have found this out the hard way, as they suffered the worst possible heartbreak in the semi-finals.

With their tie away at Sunderland heading for penalties, Daniel Ballard scored in the 121st minute to send the Black Cats to Wembley and Coventry out, and Leeds star Harry Gray has now reacted.

Frank Lampard suffers play-off heartbreak as Gray reacts

Coventry manager Frank Lampard has delivered play-off heartbreak to Leeds before, as his Derby County side knocked Marcelo Bielsa’s team out in the semi-finals in 2019.

However, the former England midfielder saw his team brutally exit at the hands of Sunderland, and they will remain in the Championship for another season.

Leeds teenager Gray clearly enjoyed the scenes, which also showed a crestfallen Lampard on the touchline, as he liked a photo of him on the Sport Bible Instagram.

Leeds thankful for avoiding play-off heartache

Leeds will be all too aware of how painful it is to lose in the Championship play-offs, having fallen short in the final last year to Southampton.

The play-offs are pure chaos, in which form goes out of the window, and even a side that finished in third could find themselves losing to a team that came well below them throughout the season.

Daniel Farke will be thankful that his side won the Championship this season and avoided the brutality of the play-offs again.

Leeds fans will be delighted that Lampard has tasted more heartbreak at this stage, after the fierce tie with his Derby side in 2019.

Sunderland will now face Sheffield United at Wembley, and Leeds could have been there in place of the Blades, given how tight the table was in the final few months of the season.

They ran away from those two, though, leaving them in the dust.
