Graham Smyth shares why Marcelo Bielsa is picking Tyler Roberts over Joe Gelhardt for Leeds

Marcelo Bielsa is potentially picking Tyler Roberts over Joe Gelhardt for Leeds due to their performances in training, according to YEP journalist Graham Smyth.

The Leeds boss has been criticised for his decision to utilise Roberts as a striker in the absence of Patrick Bamford over youngster Gelhardt recently, with things coming to a head in the club’s 3-0 defeat to Everton.

But journalist Smyth has revealed that the reason behind the decision is simply down to performances in training and in-match situations with the manager simply trusting his instinct.

“Bielsa is choosing Roberts based on everything he sees on a daily basis and the exact requirements of game scenarios,” he said.

“That’s not to say he’s necessarily correct, or infallible – he got the midfield wrong on Saturday and errs like any human – but, if there’s one thing Bielsa is, it’s well informed. His decisions are based on something.”

There are plenty of things you can question about Bielsa’s methods at times, but one thing you can’t question is his faith in young players.

Bielsa has never waivered from playing youth if he feels it is the right thing to do, so it’s interesting that fans are unhappy with him based on Gelhardt’s lack of minutes.

The youngster has impressed this season when he has featured, playing with a fearlessness at times that has given the crowd a much needed lift.

But if Bielsa feels he isn’t quite ready for whatever the scenario is, then he’s probably correct. Roberts hasn’t played badly and it seems as though Leeds fans just want to try new things.

That’s not unexpected considering their position in the league table and form this season, but a bit of trust in the man that got them to this position to begin with wouldn’t go amiss.
