Graham Smyth shares why Gnonto complained to the ref in Preston v Leeds United

Graham Smyth has shared that Leeds United ace Willy Gnonto was complaining to referee John Busby after Preston ace Ben Whiteman wasn’t shown a yellow card for his challenge in their game on Saturday.

The midfielder chose to plant his studs into the ankle of Jayden Bogle and even though he was already on a yellow card, he wasn’t dismissed for his challenge on the defender.

The Whites ended up sharing the points with Paul Heckingbottom’s men on Saturday after their 1-1 draw at Deepdale.

“Gnonto complaining to referee John Busby at half-time about the lack of yellow card for Ben Whiteman in the first half and being sent away by the official,” Smyth wrote for the Yorkshire Evening Posts website (15 December).

Leeds United were robbed at Deepdale in their Championship clash

Leeds once again dropped points in the Championship thanks to a multitude of things that went wrong against Preston.

The Whites are expected to be challenging for the title and while they still remain second in the league, their gap to league leaders Sheffield United has now increased to three, which makes their job somewhat harder.

However, if Busby had made the right call and sent Whiteman off for his challenge on Bogle, things would have likely been far different with Leeds no doubt taking advantage of their extra man.

On paper, the West Yorkshire outfit are a far better side but it feels like in recent weeks, they’ve let things slip somewhat as they’ve only won three of their last five second-tier games.

Of course, winning three is still a decent achievement but for a team of Leeds’ calibre, it feels like they should have easily triumphed over Preston.

Only time will tell what impact these two dropped points will have on the title race but if Farke’s men keep slipping up, they could end the season rather red-faced.

In other Leeds news, Wayne Rooney will be delighted after Farke’s new admission.
