Graham Smyth shares what made the hairs on his neck stand up after Leeds United v Southampton

Graham Smyth has shared what the Elland Road crowd did after Leeds United were defeated 2-1 by Southampton on Saturday (5 May).

The Whites lost out on automatic promotion on the final day of the Championship season as Ipswich Town beat Huddersfield Town 2-0 at Portman Road.

Having missed out on automatic promotion, Leeds have been condemned to the play-offs and will face Norwich City in the semi-final. Despite the disappointment, Elland Road was still in fine voice.

Writing for Yorkshire Evening Post on Sunday (5 May), Smyth said: “Elland Road, starting with the Kop, producing a Mexican Wave of raucous support as the Leeds team walked around at full-time on a lap of the stadium.

“It was hairs on the back of your neck standing up stuff.”

Despite losing out on the final day, following a run of disappointing results, Leeds must keep their heads held high as they enter the dreaded Championship play-offs.

The fact that the Whites had to wait until April to experience their first loss at Elland Road this season shows just how incredible a season Daniel Farke and his players have had, even if they were pipped by Leicester City and Ipswich.

However, four losses from their last six games, including a 4-0 defeat to QPR and a 1-0 loss to Blackburn Rovers, have been far from their best and it is no wonder why Ipswich were able to climb the table.

Leeds will certainly believe they have what it takes to claim promotion via the play-offs, with Norwich, Southampton and West Brom all securing their spots.

The Elland Road crowd could still have a vital role to play. Leeds will be back at their own ground for the semi-final second leg of the play-off and will be hoping to bring a positive result back from Carrow Road.
