Graham Smyth shares what made Leeds fans groan in convincing Coventry win

Graham Smyth revealed a backpass on 11 minutes made Leeds United supporters groan in the 3-0 win against Coventry City.

The Whites continued their surge up the Championship table with a resounding win at Elland Road on Saturday [28 September] courtesy of goals from Wilfried Gnonto, Jayden Bogle, and Joel Piroe.

However, it wasn’t all rosy at Elland Road as reported by Smyth for the Yorkshire Evening Post [29 September] as one backpass early into the game did not go down well with the Leeds faithful.

He wrote: “The home side bossed possession and took immediate control. There was still the iron-clad will to hold onto the ball – Elland Road groaned at a backwards pass on 11 minutes as Farke’s men prioritised ball retention – but there was excitement too. Elland Road roared on 16 minutes as Willy Gnonto opened the scoring in style. It was all so simple.”

Leeds United style of play is dominating the Championship

Daniel Farke boasts one of the strongest squads in the Championship and now his players are starting to fit the bill.

The Whites have dominated against inferior opposition this season, barring the 3-3 draw with Portsmouth on the opening day, but have failed to claim three points in the face of their promotion rivals.

Farke’s credentials have been questioned after the 0-0 draw with West Brom and the 1-0 loss to Burnley this term, with reports continuing to link Baggies boss Carlos Corberan with a sensational return to Elland Road [Sunday Mirror].

His emphasis on controlling possession even in the sacrifice of attacking output has become a cause for concern but since the slow start to the season the Whites have only conceded once in six Championship matches and are climbing their way firmly into the top-two conversation.

The German has performed a phenomenal job in the face of the mounting injury crisis at Elland Road and there is – by and large – a consistency to results that should keep Leeds well and truly on course for a renewed promotion push.

Leeds are building momentum, yes the results against their promotion rivals are a concern but the side are dominating against the lower-table sides in the league. If Premier League promotion is achieved at the end of the season, it will not matter one jot what they did to get there.
