Graham Smyth moots ‘second wind’ for Mateo Joseph after what happened at Leeds

Graham Smyth believes Mateo Joseph will have a “second wind” at Leeds United after his goal against Cardiff City in their 7-0 thrashing.

In addition to him breaking his goal drought, the West Yorkshire outfit also rejected a £10million bid for the Spaniard which shows how highly the Whites value him.

Writing for the Yorkshire Evening Post’s website (6 February), Smyth shared his thoughts on how the second half of the 2024/25 season could go for Joseph.

“So in the space of just a few days the 21-year-old went from potentially fighting for the second-choice striker role with a new signing, to scoring a goal, learning Leeds consider him too valuable to ship on and having his position in the squad rubber stamped by the passing of a deadline,” he wrote.

“It might even feel like a second wind for the youngster. He just has to get past Piroe and for the meantime his route is going to have to be impressive substitute cameos.”

Leeds United need Mateo Jospeh and Joel Piroe to the best of their ability

Now that Leeds are five points clear of second-placed Burnley in the Championship table, it feels like the West Yorkshire outfit are well on their way to earning promotion to the Premier League.

Daniel Farke’s main goal this year is to earn the Whites’ Premier League status back after narrowly missing out last term.

Leeds strengthened their ranks even more and with the additions of players with the quality of Manor Solomon and Jayden Bogle to their ranks, it’s hard to see how they won’t finish the campaign in one of the two automatic promotion spots.

The addition of Cameron Archer in the winter transfer window would have no doubt been impressive but seen as though that move didn’t happen, they need to rely upon Joseph and Piroe to pick up the pieces and lead their charge for promotion.

If Real Betis are already bidding £10million for the youngster, who’s to say how much the Spaniard could be worth if he has a strong end to the season.
