Graham Smyth moots loan deals for Leeds United duo with 'big futures'
Graham Smyth has mooted loan deals for “big futures” Leeds United duo Charlie Cresswell, 19, and Leo Hjelde, 18, ahead of next season.
Both teenagers featured in the Premier League this season, filling in for their senior teammates amid the Whites’ injury crisis.
However, with only seven topflight appearances between them – Smyth has suggested the starlets might need to move away from Elland Road for more game time.
He said as per Yorkshire Evening Post: “Both Cresswell and Hjelde are prospects who could have big futures, if they get game time, either with Leeds – which is difficult to see at present without someone moving aside – or on loan.”
The pair going out on loan to develop would be a very sensible idea. They both got some playing time with the first team this season whilst the squad was riddled with Covid and injuries but even during the crisis that was this season – but even then, they were only limited to seven between them which isn’t enough.
This campaign is set to be a whole lot different with the number of injuries suffered term a complete anomaly.
Hopefully, the Whites will strengthen their squad over the summer with it being in a dire state at times this season.
With Jesse Marsch’s side now in the Premier League next year – they should be able to bring in a few more quality players which will only hinder Creswell and Hjelde’s chances of playing.
It is vital that Leeds make some signings in the summer otherwise they run the risk of another Premier League relegation battle.
Unfortunately, that might have implications for the younger players in the squad but that is the natural progression for a young footballer. They will both be far better off gaining crucial first-team experience elsewhere.
