Graham Smyth gives Leeds United January transfer window update

Graham Smyth has identified the four key positions that Leeds United could look to invest in when the transfer window opens.

There are just over six weeks to go until clubs can officially sign players again and many will be busy pinpointing potential targets ahead of the new year.

Under Victor Orta and Marcelo Bielsa, the Whites have rarely made use of the January market, but could look for reinforcements this season as they are currently struggling at the wrong end of the Premier League table.

Writing for the Yorkshire Evening Post, Smyth suggested that “some movement remains possible” in the January transfer window at Elland Road.

He proposed that Leeds could look for reinforcements in goal, at left-back, in central midfield and upfront, with squad depth lacking in those areas in particular.

New additions needed

Supporters will be encouraged by the news that Leeds remain open to the possibility of dipping into the January transfer market.

Over the last few years the club haven’t necessarily needed to spend mid-season as they have been enjoying strong campaigns, but this year the situation is different.

With 11 games gone, the Whites sit just three points above the Premier League relegation zone and have struggled without Patrick Bamford, who has been out injured since September.

It could lead Orta to search for a new striker or attacking reinforcements in general, particularly if Liverpool target Raphinha was to leave Elland Road.

Bielsa’s severe lack of options in midfield has also been highlighted this season and it would be a risk to rely on Adam Forshaw to solve this issue considering he is only just returning from two years on the sidelines.

In other Leeds United news, David Norris has predicted that one Whites star could leave the club in the near future.
