Leeds United will likely be on the lookout for a new striker if they get promoted and they were linked with an “ambitious” move for Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard on Sunday.
The report came from the Mirror and it got plenty of Leeds fans excited.
He’s been on fire since signing for Celtic for just over £9m, scoring almost a goal-a-game, with 60 in 126 games.
However, Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth has said that he hasn’t “heard his name around Elland Road” and that the story seems presumptuous.
In a fan Q&A on Monday, one Leeds fans asked: “Any truth in Leeds interest in Odsonne Edouard at Celtic?”
“I haven’t heard his name around Elland Road but would say that tabloid tales on players with reported £30m price tags strike me as a little presumptuous,” Smyth said.
“All of Leeds’ summer business will be dictated by the league they’re playing in, which is not yet certain.
“If they could, hypothetically, spend that amount of money on a single player, I can think of a player they’d be much better spending it on and he’s currently in the building and having a tremendous first season in the Championship.
“There’s also the little matter of Augustin to settle, as well, before money is spent on a goalscorer.”
Smyth is talking about Ben White and it’s fair to say he’s the player all Leeds fans would love to see sign a permanent deal this summer.
Brighton have said that White is in their future plans, though, and it doesn’t look like they’re going to get relegated this season.
Jean-Kevin Augustin’s career at Elland Road seems to be over, although the final decision on the obligation that Leeds have to sign him could be decided by the lawyers.
Augustin has been sent back to RB Leipzig, though, and, according to Phil Hay, the player himself believes his time at Leeds is done.
That would leave Leeds with just one senior number nine – Patrick Bamford – and that obviously wouldn’t be enough in the Premier League
We think Eduoard would be a fantastic signing, and he’s got all the attributes to play as the lone striker in a Bielsa 4-1-4-1, although he wouldn’t come cheap.
He’s also a proven goal-scorer, albeit in the Premiership.
