Graham Smyth: FA investigation still underway after Leeds-Burnley incident

Leeds United finished the season in barnstorming fashion, winning the last four games and ending ninth in the Premier League.

The biggest of these was the 4-0 win over Burnley and that game was also notable for a controversial incident involving Gjanni Alioski and Dwight McNeil.

Alioski was floored in a challenge after which it appeared that McNeil said something to him. Reports also claimed he had spat on the Leeds player.

After this incident, Alioski aimed a gesture at McNeil with some trying to claim it was racist in nature.

The referee spoke to both managers and captains at the time and Sean Dyche confirmed that Burnley had filed a complaint to the FA.

It’s gone quiet since then but the incident hasn’t been forgotten.

According to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth, who was responding to a Leeds fan on Twitter, “It’s still with the FA.”

Still could be a Leeds problem

Our initial reaction to this was that it was Alioski being Alioski.

And, with Gjanni expected to leave in the summer, we weren’t concerned about the FA investigation as it wouldn’t be a Leeds problem.

However, it looks like Alioski is still considering whether to sign a new Leeds contract and it could well be that he’s still with us next season.

We think that’s still an outside shot but it means that the result of the FA investigation could be a Leeds issue.

Was there anything serious in the gesture that Alioski made? Unless there was something said as well then it seems like it was just a childish reaction to something McNeil said.

Hopefully, the FA will decide that no further action is required.
