Graeme Bailey shares what he has been told about Leeds United gem Archie Gray

Archie Gray wants to play in central midfield for Leeds United next season, Graeme Bailey has said.

The in-demand teenager enjoyed a breakout season for the Whites in 2023/24 excelling both in the middle of the park and at right-back.

Of the 52 games he played last term, 30 were at right-back but journalist Bailey revealed he had been told that is not where he sees himself long-term.

Speaking to Leeds United News (20 June), Bailey said: “Going forward I have been told he wants to play in midfield, will we see that happen this season at Leeds? It will be interesting.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if someone does test the water with him this summer, but I am not expecting him to leave.

“But never say never. I don’t think Leeds would let Gray go for less than £40m, even a £50m deal. They would want big, big money and rightly so.”

Why Archie Gray would excel in a midfield role for Leeds United next season

Gray was Leeds’ first-choice right-back for most of last season and, thanks to his excellent performances each week, the youngster has been linked with a move away from the West Yorkshire outfit this summer [The Athletic, 13 June].

Although Gray was Daniel Farke’s first choice at full-back, the club had the likes of Sam Byram, Djed Spence (for a short while), and Connor Roberts who could all play more naturally in that role.

Leeds United defender Connor Roberts
Connor Roberts was on loan at Leeds United last season.

So, not only does this show how strong of a player the 18-year-old is but it also begs the question of how good he could be if he was played in his natural role on a more consistent basis.

It’s evident to see that the youngster has come on leaps and bounds this term, but, there’s no denying that his skillset is better suited to a midfield role.

And, fortunately for the youngster, his wish could be granted as, in recent weeks, Leeds’ pursuit for Trai Hume has escalated [LeedsLive, 17 June].
