'Get him back', 'Coming home?' - Many Leeds fans want ex-midfielder in backroom role

Leeds United fans want to see Andrew Hughes return to Elland Road after he confirmed he’s left his coaching role at Sheffield United.

Hughes, 42, took to his personal Twitter account on Tuesday to announce his exit from Bramall Lane, less than a year after being handed a coaching role with the Blades’ Under-23s.

The former Leeds midfielder said: “I’d like to thank everyone at Sheffield United from the top class manager, first-team coaches and staff, academy coaches, players all the way down to U9 coach and staff. I wish the club well for the future.”

Hughes has had a number of different coaching roles since hanging up his boots in 2015.

He led Bolton’s Under-23s for a brief spell and also had stints at Rotherham United, Crystal Palace and Huddersfield before joining Sheffield United last year.

Between 2007 and his move to Scunthorpe in 2010, Hughes made over 100 appearances for Leeds and played a key role in helping the Whites win promotion from League One.

The former midfielder remains popular among Leeds fans and that is why it is no surprise to see so many of them calling for the club to re-hire him in light of his departure from Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United.

Hughes could be a handy addition for Leeds given his knowledge of the club and his growing experience as a coach.

Let’s see if the club answers the fans’ call for an Elland Road return.
