Georginio Rutter could be axed for Leeds United v Norwich in latest team news

Jon Newsome thinks Daniel Farke could consider dropping Georginio Rutter for Joel Piroe when Leeds United face Norwich City in the second leg of their playoff semi-final on 16 May.

Rutter started up front in the first leg at Carrow Road on 11 May, which ended in a goalless draw.

And Newsome feels the Frenchman was outshone by Piroe, who came on as a second-half substitute.

Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds (12 May), Newsome said: “I hate to say it, but [Rutter] was really poor today. Nothing stuck.

“He is that kind of player that really frustrates you, but also has that little sparkle of magic. That magic dust has disappeared for the moment and he has been missing for quite a while.

“I think [Piroe] made more of an impact in the last 20-25 minutes than Rutter had the whole game. Definitely gives Daniel Farke food for [thought for] Thursday night in his selection.”

Should Daniel Farke drop Georginio Rutter for Joel Piroe?

Farke’s approach at Carrow Road was clear – don’t lose the tie in the first leg. And he certainly achieved what he set out to do, earning a 0-0 draw away from home.

He started a midfield trio of Archie Gray, Ilia Gruev and Glen Kamara with Rutter leading the line as opposed to his usual set-up in which two central midfielders operate behind Rutter, who supports the centre-forward from between the lines.

The club’s record signing has demonstrated his capacity for creativity this season – only Ipswich Town and former Leeds left-back Leif Davis has registered more Championship assists this term than his 15 – but that was blunted as he was required to operate as the focal point and given less freedom to roam.

However, the last of the Frenchman’s league assists came in a 2-0 win over Milwall on 17 March and he is failing to justify his continued selection amid a dramatic loss of form.

It is entirely possible that Farke turns to Piroe over Rutter when the Canaries visit Elland Road to decide who will be going to Wembley.

In other Leeds United news, a “disaster” has been outlined as four players have already been lined up for a summer transfer exit.
