'Genuinely delighted' - Ally McCoist reacts to Leeds promotion, makes comment about Elland Road

Ally McCoist has admitted that he is “genuinely delighted” to see Leeds United back in the Premier League.

The Whites confirmed their promotion back to the top flight after 16 years away when West Brom lost to Huddersfield Town on Thursday evening, sparking celebrations across the city and an outpouring of congratulations from big names across the professional game.

And McCoist has joined the barrage of well-wishers with a post to his personal Instagram.

Writing on his own account, the ex-Rangers hero said: “Genuinely delighted to see Leeds United back in the top flight, brilliant club and fanbase.

“And I always did like Elland Road!”

McCoist scored a vital goal for Rangers when they faced off against Leeds in a well-contested Champions League tie between the two British giants back in 1992.

No wonder McCoist has fond memories of Elland Road, bearing in mind the heroics he pulled off against the Whites some 28 years ago.

As disappointing as that result was way back then, what we wouldn’t give to be competing at that level once more.

Hopefully, after yesterday’s confirmation, we can start to build towards recapturing that kind of status.

Of course, we don’t want to be running before we can walk, and the main thing next season is to consolidate our position in the top flight.

Once that is done, then we can start to look up the table and properly challenge for those more illustrious finishes.

Teams like Wolves and Sheffield United should provide hope that we can go up and make an instant impact – especially with Bielsa at the helm – but after such a long absence, the absolute priority must be ensuring that this isn’t a one-season wonder.

In other Leeds United news, What a raging Bielsa barked at Leeds staff before bringing Pablo Hernandez off v Barnsley.
