Leeds United fans are desperate to see Joe Gelhardt makes his debut before the end of the season and training footage hints he is in with a chance versus Manchester City.
It certainly looks like he’s making the squad after missing out last time out.
The Leeds United Official YouTube channel posted an ‘Inside Training’ video on the eve of the clash with Pep Guardiola’s side and it is sure to have tongues wagging for a number of reasons.
Gelhardt was the only U23s player spotted in the four-and-a-half minute footage and that could be big news for Saturday’s trip to the Etihad Stadium.
The 18-year-old was left out of the matchday squad for last weekend’s Yorkshire derby win over Sheffield United, and he has only graced the Whites bench once in the last four outings, at Fulham on March 19.
He’s never been seen on the pitch.
However, his prospects look better this time around and he is likely to be in the squad with Jack Harrison ineligible for Saturday’s clash due to the terms of his Manchester City loan agreement.
A spot has opened up and Gelhardt will almost certainly fill it.
With 11 goals in 15 Premier League 2 (Division 2) appearances this season he has done all he can to stake a claim for a spot in Bielsa’s side and now Whites everywhere patiently wait for him to be unleashed by El Loco for his first-team debut.
There was also some more positive news with the emergence of Adam Forshaw out on the grass for the first time this year – the 29-year-old midfielder has been missing from the first-team since September 2019 due to a number of setbacks relating to hip issues.
But he will hope to get some minutes under his belt before the campaign’s conclusion with eight games to go.
Another player hoping to feature after fitness problems is Pablo Hernandez.
The fan favourite played an instrumental role last season to inspire the Whites to Championship glory but he has endured a stop-start 2020/21 campaign with just 13 Premier League appearances to his name.
He missed all three matches in March but returned to the Elland Road substitutes bench last Saturday and he was also spotted in the YouTube clip despite being absent from other training videos in recent weeks. It could suggest he’s back to full fitness.
