Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher hammer 'Absolutely Shambolic' Leeds United after 3-1 loss v West Ham United live on Sky Sports
Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have ripped into Leeds United defenders following their 3-1 loss to West Ham, labelling them “absolutely shambolic”.
The Whites are on the verge of relegation heading into the final game of the season after losing 3-1 to West Ham on Sunday (21 May), meaning they must win against Tottenham at Elland Road on the final day to have any hope of survival.
But after watching the performance while live on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports (22 May, 19:09), Neville was furious with the team and believes they capitulated as soon as Declan Rice equalised and Patrick Bamford was forced off injured midway through the first-half.
“We just talked about Sean Dyche and how he’s done that at Everton with set-pieces, but the moment this goal went in and then a couple of minutes later Bamford, who had been a handful in the opening 20 minutes, went off before the injury, Leeds were done,” he said. And they capitulated in this game.
“It will be a real worry now, obviously Leeds are in big trouble.
“It was too easy for West Ham. You thought it was perfect if you wanted an away game. A team who had just been away in Europe, you saw them all with beers in their hands after the game on Thursday night celebrating.

“They made six changes, but I think many questioned them before the game saying West Ham were going to be an easy opponent, but Leeds’ defending is absolutely shambolic.
“Unbelievable from Paqueta, he’s a brilliant player, but the way they lunge in and the way they lack composure those Leeds defenders, I have to say that takes some doing that. Time and time again, week in week out.”
Carragher then jumped on the Leeds defence too, taking his swing at the players.
“They’ve got terrible defenders Leeds, they really have.
“Sam Allardyce has come in and conceded seven goals in three games, and he’s a manager who’s known for making it difficult for the opposition.”
Awful
Whatever happens on Sunday at Elland Road against Spurs, the team needs to be invested in and upgraded in defence especially this summer.
Whether it’s the Premier League or in the Championship, there are players here who simply aren’t good enough to wear this shirt and they can’t be allowed to continue to bring the overall level of the squad down.
Neville obviously hates the club because of his Manchester United connections, and Carragher always likes to say something to get headlines, but it’s hard to say that they’re wrong about this.
Defensively no team has conceded more and we just consistently make individual errors in games which makes it so hard to defend the players when it’s a constant.
If we survive it will be by the skin of our teeth and with all the luck in the world, and we will have to find a way to correct the problem properly in the summer one way or another.
